The recent shooting of a fellow hunter by Vice President Dick Cheney has raised the level of awareness of rules used for safe hunting. Many pundits are asking if Cheney followed the rules of hunting safely. Posted on the Web site of the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation (AGSF) are their version of hunting safety rules. The AGSF provides guidelines on hunting safely before and during a hunting trip. One of the main safety rules for hunting, according to the Web site, is to always point the muzzle away from yourself and others. Before the hunt, participants should establishing zones of fire with fellow hunters including an "area within which each hunter will track and fire should game appear." Other hunting safety rules as espoused by the AGSF include: identifying the target before shooting; don't shoot if in doubt; do not use a firearm's scope for binoculars; always know the target and the surrounding area; never shoot at sound or movement; always avoid alcohol and drugs, and never hunt when tired. The National Rifle Association offers no rules for safe hunting on their Web site, but the do offer a code of ethics, which includes always asking a land owners permission, obeying the rules of safe gun handling, obeying all game laws and regulations, acquiring marksmanship and hunting skills, and supporting conservation efforts. They appear to believe their code will lead to hunting safely. |
